TOSCA (Opera in 3 acts - Music by G. Puccini - Libretto by G. Giacosa e Luigi Illica)

Inspired by the Sardou’s Drama “Tosca”, Puccini ended his composition in 1899, which can be considered one of the most famous Operas of him. Its premiere took place at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome just on the 14 January 1900.
As it was for Sardou’s work, also the Puccini’s one is linked to the several historical events in Italy at the end of the XVIII century: after Napoleon’s victories during the French Revolutionary Wars, the French troops had occupied Rome, abolished the political power of the Pope and established the republic. As soon as Napoleon moved from Italy for some new far conquests, the Neapolitan army led by Ferdinando IV di Borbone removed the French presidio, took to trial the representatives and brought back the monarchy. This is the background in which the story of the protagonists with their personal affairs takes place.

THE BERBER OF SEVILLE (Opera in 2 acts – Music by G. Rossini – Libretto by C. Sterbini)

The Barber of Seville, which was initially titled “Almaviva, o sia l’inutile precauzione”, was presented for the first time at the Theatre Argentina in Rome on the 20th February 1816. It was largely whistled, but it is said to be a plan made by the Theatre Valle, which competed with Theatre Argentina, or by some Paisiello’s follower, which had already given his personal interpretation of “The barber of Seville” in 1782. It all was released by the large success in the following repeated performances, which were able to eclipse the opera by Parisiello and make of Rossini’s one of the most represented operas in the world.

NABUCCO (Opera in 4 acts - Music by G. Verdi - Libretto by T. Solera)

Verdi's third opera Nabucco owes is reputation to the famous chorus "Va pensiero", sung in the third act by the Hebrew people, who long for their homeland after being exiled by the Babylonian king Nabucco. The opera, inspired by the Old Testament, was an immediate success when performed for the first time in 1842 at the theatre La Scala in Milan and established permanently Verdi s reputation as a composer.
